Mrs. Stillman's 5th Grade Blog-March 15, 2019

We will be celebrating Jack’s Birthday on Thursday!

Report cards went home on Friday, March 15. Please sign and return the envelope. The report card is yours to keep.

Reminder: This week is 11:30 dismissal on Thursday. Conferences take place from 1:00-7:00 pm. There is no school on Friday. There is school on Monday, March 25. This is a snow make-up day.

Reading Logs are due Monday. They will not be accepted without dates and a parent signature.

My hope is that students choose another historical fiction book to read on their own, now that so many loved their book report books. It is such a wonderful genre for readers and learners.

Book Report Update: We decided to work on much of the final draft work in class as well as many kids typed their pieces out and printed pictures for their “newspaper posters.” Monday will be their last class day to put their work together onto a poster. They can take it home with them to glue and add anything if unfinished. It will be due Wednesday. I do not have students Thursday. They will begin presenting reports the following week, in increments, taking the poster home to practice if needed.

Tuesday and Wednesday of next week we will continue reading The Cay.

We need some experiments. We will start looking at one of Newton’s laws and do the math that goes along with the science..

Social Studies

The Age of Exploration continues to be the focus this week. We will take a closer look at several specific explorers, the countries they came from and the purpose for their travels. We’ll finish up time zones in Daily Geography.

This week we will finish evaluating percentages, fractions, and decimals with quiz on Wednesday. We will then take a look at ratios. Next up, we will move into Geometry.

Language Arts/Writing

Grammar: We continue with Adverbs by taking a look at Comparing Adverbs.

Vocabulary/DOL: No vocabulary or spelling due to short week.

Writing: We will begin our Compare and Contrast Essay. We begin this unit by first taking a look at how the accordion paragraph opens up into an essay.

Throughout Lent, we will be reciting a decade of the Rosary once a week. This week we will gather in the church with the Intermediate classes at 11:00 on Thursday and pray the third decade. Please join us if you can.

We continue to reflect on Lent with a class booklet and bible studies.

We will also read about the Gospel in our Venture Magazine: Jesus invites us to change.
