Notes From the Gym
The basketball season is winding down, and there is so much to be proud of with our St. Monica teams! Our teams made great progress during League play, represented us well at tournaments, and played with a lot of heart from the opening tip to the final buzzer of every game played. I am extremely proud of all of our 5th-8th grade teams, both boys and girls, and will share a blurb about each team in next week's Weekly Reminder.
I would like to congratulate our 8th grade boys on a wonderful season, and they fell in a hard fought game last Wednesday night at the Padre Serra Tournament. They worked well as a team in the 24-20 loss to St. John Vianney, and made all of the fans in attendance quite proud.
Our 8th grade girls won their first round game in the Padre Serra Tournament on Saturday, and will be playing next Sunday at 4:30 out at Mount Mary University. The combined Holy Family/St. Monica team played tenacious defense and made some great passes to win their first game handily. I would encourage all of our families to go out and support the girls this Sunday, and you will see a separate message about the game in this Weekly Reminder. The bottom line....the louder the gym, the more fired up the girls will be - GO RAIDERS!!
Next, I would ask that our basketball players return their game uniforms to school AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please make sure that they are laundered and ready to be put away. Getting the uniforms organized and stored right away makes a big difference, so I appreciate your prompt attention to this request. Please make sure that you put your child's name on the bag it is returned in, or clip a note to it, so that we can keep accurate track of the returns.
Our final sport of the year is track, and I wanted to let our families know the plans for this spring sport offered to our 5th-8th graders. Coach Gonzales has let me know that practices will start the week of April 1st, and they will be held on Monday and Thursday afternoons right after school. The student-athletes will participate in a couple of meets, which will be a great experience for them. There will be more information shared in the coming weeks, and yet, I wanted to get this on your radar if your son/daughter is interested in being part of the team this spring.
Finally, I am proud to announce that we met our goal for the Kids Heart Challenge, bringing in $13,500. The prizes have been ordered, but it can take up to 4 weeks to have them delivered. Thank you to all of our families for your support with this cause, and I am also pleased that our students' jump roping skills definitely improved during the event. I will share more detailed information about the results of our Kids Heart Challenge next week, but wanted to let everyone know that we did indeed meet our goal.
I look forward to seeing lots of red and white in the stands on Sunday afternoon, and also seeing basketball uniforms "pouring" into my office in the next few days. Thank you for your support of all that goes on in the gym.
Blessings, Mrs. Wallner
